This year's Celebration was very successful, and was opened by the Mayor of Erewash, Cllr. Jennifer Hulls and Friends' Chairman Sarah Taylor, with many people coming to listen to the Derby Serenaders, a fifteen piece brass band, and Derbyshire poet John Keeling. The Friends also offered to look through the cemetery records in exchange for a donation, which was popular with local historians and family tree enthusiasts. Guided walks around the cemetery were again on offer. The Friends of Park Cemetery and the Ilkeston and District Local History Society were also keen to inform on the area's history.

Animal Magic brought along the wildlife in their care - a young Barn Owl, two baby pigeons and a hedgehog, Erewash Valley Wildlife offered advice on wildlife watching, with a chance to use their impressive telescopes. There was also a chance to buy wildlife friendly plants.

For our younger guests, Groundwork Derby and Derbyshire used the Friends' new Schools Pack by organising a Gravestones Detective contest, and Ella Bramwell was kept busy face painting.

Saturday, 16 April, 2011, 1 - 4 p.m.

The Friends of Stanton Road Cemetery held a successful event to celebrate the recent restorations which were funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The lovely sunny afternoon was really busy with members of the Friends and of the public listening to the song of the Ilkeston Giant, admiring the Giant's tree sculpture, joining the Treasure Hunt and learning about the wildlife in the cemetery and about the fascinating history of the cemetery on a guided walk. We would like to thank the Ilkeston and District Local History Society, Bev Rhodes and her beautiful Barn Owl, The Ram Company, our President Robert Lindsay, the Mayor of Erewash, Mr and Mrs B Whitelegg for their speeches, and members of the Friends for their help in making the day such a success.

A video of the Ram Company performing the Giant's song can be found at the foot of the Ilkeston Giant page.
