Rededication

On Saturday, 18 October, 2008, the grave of the Ilkeston Giant, Samuel Taylor, was rededicated in a ceremony attended by 49 members and guests of the Friends of Stanton Road Cemetery.

Chairman Mike Sanders and Pride in Erewash Co-ordinator Richard Windsor introduced the event. The Reverend Jacquie Gavin conducted the rededication, and the Friends' President, Robert Lindsay, and the Mayor of Erewash, Mrs Barbara Harrison, each gave a speech. The occasion ended with a reading of The Yew Tree of Ilkeston by poet Dave Wood.

Robert Lindsay said "Speaking as a showman about another showman, I know what it's all about. It's a very odd profession. I forgot the word 'rededication' about this event and stupidly told my agent 'I'm going to open a grave'. He didn't ask for his ten per cent."

He recalled boyhood games in the cemetery and was terrified one night when a giant came lumbering out of the trees. It was two school friends dressed in a man's overcoat.

During the event, Joan Hunt gave a tribute to former Chairman, Helen Varnam, who worked hard for the grave's restoration but who sadly died during the summer.
